This new blog is my humble way of sharing random thoughts and learnings about photography. I'm not much for Twitter, and wanted a low-effort way of putting thoughts out there into the world. Mostly this is intended for me to record my evolution as a photographer, and my progress towards a goal of becoming a more serious photographer. But perhaps there will be a few tips and tricks that will help others, such as software recommendations or quick reviews of gear.

I might include a few random tech support tips here and there that are not strictly speaking related to photography in any way.

I've been interested in photography and taking photos for over 20 years, but only recently started taking it seriously as a hobby and putting in regular effort to learn and improve. So here's to progress!

I'll try to post at least one photo that I'm either proud of or that I'm critical of with each post. The one below is in the "proud" category.

Previewing CR3 files in Windows' File Explorer

Let's assume you have a recent Canon mirrorless camera and have decided to shoot raw. You put your memory card into the card reader, and copy the files to your Windows computer. Your photos are in a format called CR3, and you can't see what's what. You have to open them in Lightroom, clunky Canon-specific software, or some other tool before you can even see a thumbnail of your images to know which ones you want to work on. Maybe you don't even have access to a tool like Lightroom. This is a pretty horrible workflow. Is there an easier way? Yes! Open the Microsoft Store and install the Raw Image Extension utility. This isn't a separate app, but rather an extension to Windows itself that allows File Explorer, Photos, and various other Windows applications to open and edit multiple raw image formats, including the ability to see thumbnails for CR3 files.
